Texas Adult Driver Education

STEP 1: Enroll in the iDrive Academy 6-Hour Adult Online Course

If you’re 18–24 years old, Texas law requires you to complete a state-approved 6-hour adult
driver education course.
If you’re 25 or older, the course is not required but highly recommended. Otherwise, you must
pass the written knowledge test in person at the DPS.

Why choose our course?

  • Complete it 100% online
  • Take the DPS written knowledge test online
  • Skip the line at the DPS!
STEP 2: Pass the Final Exam & Get Your Certificate

After completing the course:

  • Take a short final exam on Texas driving rules and road signs
  • Score 80% or higher to pass
  • Retake the test up to 3 times.

Upon passing, you’ll receive your Adult Driver Education Certificate — no written exam needed at the DPS!

STEP 3: Complete the Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) Program

Before taking the road test, all first-time adult drivers must complete the free one-hour ITAD video provided by the Texas DPS.
This course focuses on distracted driving awareness.

With a learner’s permit, you can:

  • Drive with a licensed adult (age 21+)
  • Take behind-the-wheel lessons with a certified instructor
  • Complete your driving test at a Third Party Skills Testing Provider

Make a DPS appointment and bring your certificate, ITAD certificate, and required documents.

  • Texas DPS office, or
  • licensed third-party testing provider

Bring the following:

  • Your Adult Driver Ed Certificate (ADE-1317)
  • Your ITAD Certificate
  • Proof of Identity, Texas Residency, and U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence
